Siittiöinjektiota, also known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), is a method of assisted reproduction used in in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is a specialized technique where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. This procedure is typically employed when there are significant concerns about sperm quality or quantity, or when previous attempts at conventional IVF have been unsuccessful.

The process begins with egg retrieval from the female partner, similar to standard IVF. Sperm is then collected from the male partner or a donor. Under a microscope, a skilled embryologist immobilizes a single sperm and aspirates it into a fine needle. This sperm is then carefully injected into the cytoplasm of a mature egg. The fertilized egg, now an embryo, is cultured in the laboratory for several days before being transferred to the uterus.

ICSI is particularly beneficial for cases of severe male infertility, including very low sperm count, poor sperm motility, abnormal sperm shape, or when sperm cannot be retrieved through ejaculation and must be obtained surgically from the testes or epididymis. It can also be used in situations where there are antibodies in the seminal fluid that hinder fertilization or when a couple has experienced unexplained infertility despite multiple IVF cycles. While highly effective, ICSI, like all assisted reproductive technologies, carries its own set of potential risks and success rates can vary depending on individual circumstances.
