Sieniyhteyttä, meaning "fungal connection" in Finnish, refers to the intricate and widespread symbiotic relationships between fungi and plants. These associations are crucial for the functioning of most terrestrial ecosystems. The most common type is mycorrhiza, a mutualistic relationship where fungi colonize the root systems of plants. In return for carbohydrates produced by the plant through photosynthesis, the fungi enhance the plant's uptake of water and essential mineral nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, from the soil.

There are two main types of mycorrhizae: ectomycorrhizae and endomycorrhizae. Ectomycorrhizae form a sheath around the root tips and penetrate between root cells, but not into them. They are common with trees like pines and oaks. Endomycorrhizae, also known as arbuscular mycorrhizae, penetrate directly into the plant root cells, forming branched structures called arbuscules. These are found in a vast majority of plant species, including crops and grasses.

Beyond nutrient exchange, fungal connections can facilitate communication between plants. Through the mycorrhizal network, plants can share resources, warning signals about pests or diseases, and even carbon compounds. This underground web of fungal hyphae, often referred to as the "wood wide web," highlights the interconnectedness of plant life and the vital role fungi play in supporting biodiversity and ecosystem health. The efficiency of nutrient cycling and plant resilience are heavily influenced by the presence and health of these fungal associations.
