Semiose is the study of signs and symbols and their interpretation. Icons resemble their objects, such as a portrait. Indexes have a direct causal connection to their objects, like smoke indicating fire. Symbols have an arbitrary relationship with their objects, established by convention, such as the word "dog." Ferdinand de Saussure, a Swiss linguist, also contributed significantly to semiotics, focusing on the arbitrary nature of the linguistic sign and the relationship between the signifier (the sound-image) and the signified (the concept).
