selkäydinkapseli
Selkäydinkapseli refers to the dural sheath that encloses the spinal cord. This tough, fibrous membrane is the outermost of the three meninges, the protective layers surrounding the central nervous system. It extends from the foramen magnum, where the skull opens into the vertebral canal, down to the sacrum. The selkäydinkapseli provides structural support and protection to the delicate spinal cord. It is continuous with the cranial dura mater, which surrounds the brain. Between the selkäydinkapseli and the arachnoid mater, another meningeal layer, is the subdural space. This space is typically potential, meaning it is usually only present in pathological conditions. The selkäydinkapseli is anchored to the vertebral column at various points, further contributing to its protective role. Inflammation or infection of the selkäydinkapseli is known as pachymeningitis, which can lead to neurological deficits due to compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots. Damage to this structure can compromise the integrity of the spinal cord and its protective environment.
