Selkärankavaltimot, known in English as vertebral arteries, are a pair of major arteries that ascend through the neck. They originate from the subclavian arteries, which are located in the upper chest. As they travel upwards, the vertebral arteries pass through the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae, a series of small openings in the bones of the neck. This passage protects the arteries as they navigate the cervical spine.
