Selkärankavaltimot

Selkärankavaltimot refers to the vertebral arteries in Finnish. These are two major arteries that branch off from the subclavian arteries, located in the neck. They ascend through the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae, providing a protected passage through the spine. After exiting the skull through the foramen magnum, the left and right vertebral arteries unite to form the basilar artery at the base of the pons.

The primary function of the vertebral arteries is to supply oxygenated blood to the posterior part of the brain. This includes the cerebellum, brainstem (medulla oblongata, pons, and midbrain), and parts of the occipital and temporal lobes. Together with the carotid arteries, which supply the anterior part of the brain, the vertebral arteries form the vertebrobasilar system, a crucial network for cerebral circulation.

Disruptions to blood flow within the vertebral arteries can have serious neurological consequences. Conditions such as atherosclerosis, vertebral artery dissection, or compression from cervical spine abnormalities can lead to transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) or strokes. Symptoms may include dizziness, vertigo, visual disturbances, ataxia, and cranial nerve deficits.
