Selkäydinverenkierrossa refers to the blood circulation within the spinal cord. This vital system supplies oxygen and nutrients to the spinal cord tissues and removes waste products. The primary artery supplying the spinal cord is the anterior spinal artery, which runs longitudinally along the ventral side of the spinal cord. It is formed by the confluence of branches from the vertebral arteries.

The anterior spinal artery is further complemented by the posterior spinal arteries, usually two in number, which run along the dorsal side. These arteries receive blood supply from various sources, including the vertebral arteries and segmental arteries that arise from the aorta. The confluence of these segmental arteries creates a critical network of supply known as the "artery of Adamkiewicz" or the great anterior radicular artery, which provides significant blood flow to the lower and middle portions of the spinal cord.

Venous drainage from the spinal cord occurs through a network of veins that ultimately drain into the internal and external vertebral venous plexuses. These plexuses are valveless and extend the length of the vertebral column. Disruptions to this delicate circulatory system, such as blockages or insufficient blood flow, can lead to serious neurological deficits and functional impairments, highlighting the importance of maintaining healthy spinal cord circulation.
