Seljaajuuralused, also known as spinal meninges, are the three membranes that enclose the spinal cord. These layers protect the delicate neural tissue of the spinal cord from injury and infection. From outermost to innermost, they are the dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater. The dura mater is the tough, outermost layer, providing a robust protective barrier. Beneath it lies the arachnoid mater, a thin, weblike layer. The subarachnoid space, located between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater, is filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This fluid acts as a cushion, absorbing shock and providing nutrients to the spinal cord. The pia mater is the innermost layer, a thin, highly vascular membrane that adheres directly to the surface of the spinal cord, following its every contour. This intricate layering system is crucial for maintaining the health and function of the central nervous system.
