Selectiefilters, or selectieve filters, are systems or algorithms that separate desired components from unwanted ones by transmitting only a subset of features while attenuating the rest. They are used to condition signals, reduce noise, or isolate specific properties in a wide range of applications. The concept applies to electronic signal processing, optical systems, and filtering of physical mixtures such as chemicals or membranes.

In electronic contexts, selectieve filters are designed to pass signals within a chosen frequency range and suppress others. They can be passive, using resistors, capacitors and inductors, or active, employing amplifying elements such as operational amplifiers. Common types are low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and band-stop (notch) filters. Digital filters implement the same principles through algorithms (FIR or IIR) that operate on sampled data. Key performance parameters include the passband and stopband edges, attenuation in the stopband, passband ripple, filter order, center frequency, Q factor, and the phase or group delay response.

In optics, selective filters transmit specific wavelengths while blocking others. Examples include interference filters and colored or neutral density filters. Characteristics include the transmission spectrum, central wavelength, bandwidth (often described by FWHM), and optical density. Optical filters are essential in photography, fluorescence microscopy, spectroscopy, and astronomy.

Performance and design considerations include trade-offs between selectivity, insertion loss, phase response, and implementation complexity. Applications span communications, audio processing, imaging, spectroscopy, and laboratory filtration, where selective transmission or attenuation improves measurement accuracy and signal quality.
