Sekundærkonsumentene, often translated as secondary consumers, are organisms within an ecosystem that feed on primary consumers. This trophic level is crucial for the flow of energy and nutrients through the food web. Primary consumers, also known as herbivores, obtain their energy by consuming producers, which are typically plants or other photosynthetic organisms. Secondary consumers, in turn, derive their energy by preying on these herbivores.

Examples of secondary consumers are widespread across various ecosystems. In terrestrial environments, a common example would be a frog that eats insects (which are primary consumers). In aquatic ecosystems, a small fish that consumes zooplankton (which feed on phytoplankton) would be a secondary consumer. Carnivores that primarily hunt herbivores, or omnivores that consume both plants and animals, can also occupy the secondary consumer level.

The role of secondary consumers is vital for maintaining balance within an ecosystem. By controlling the populations of primary consumers, they prevent overgrazing and the depletion of producer resources. Their presence also provides a food source for tertiary consumers, which are organisms that feed on secondary consumers, thus forming a more complex food chain. If the population of secondary consumers were to decline significantly, the population of primary consumers could increase unchecked, leading to potential disruption of the entire ecosystem.
