Sandstone is composed primarily of sand-sized grains, while shale is made of very fine-grained material like silt and clay. Conglomerates contain rounded pebbles and cobbles.

Chemical sedimentary rocks form when minerals precipitate out of a solution, typically water. This precipitation can occur due to evaporation of the water or changes in the chemical conditions of the water. Common examples include rock salt (halite), gypsum, and some limestones. Rock salt forms when saltwater evaporates, leaving behind salt crystals.

Organic sedimentary rocks are composed primarily of the remains of plants and animals. Coal, for instance, forms from the accumulation and burial of plant material in swampy environments over millions of years. Some types of limestone are also considered organic if they are formed from the skeletal remains of marine organisms like corals and shells. These different types of sedimentary rocks provide valuable clues about past environments and geological processes.
