sedimentaarisiksi is a Finnish adjective that translates to "sedimentary" in English. It describes rocks that are formed from the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at the Earth's surface, followed by cementation. These particles, known as sediment, are derived from weathering and erosion of pre-existing rocks, or from the precipitation of dissolved minerals from water.

Sedimentary rocks are typically formed in layers, or strata, and often contain fossils, which are the preserved remains or traces of ancient organisms. The process of formation involves several stages: weathering, erosion, transportation, deposition, compaction, and cementation. Weathering breaks down existing rocks, erosion and transportation move the resulting fragments, deposition occurs when the transporting agent loses energy, and compaction and cementation bind the sediments together to form solid rock.

Common examples of sedimentary rocks include sandstone, shale, limestone, and conglomerate. Each type is characterized by the size, shape, and composition of its constituent grains. Sandstone is composed mainly of sand-sized grains, shale is made of clay and silt-sized particles, limestone is primarily composed of calcium carbonate, and conglomerate consists of rounded pebbles and cobbles. Sedimentary rocks cover about 75% of the Earth's land surface and play a crucial role in understanding Earth's history, including past climates, environments, and the evolution of life.
