Sea traffic, or maritime traffic, refers to the movement and management of vessels across seas and oceans. It encompasses commercial shipping, passenger ferries, fishing fleets, naval vessels, and offshore operations, and it is a critical input for global trade, safety, and environmental protection. The flow of ships is coordinated to minimize collisions, optimize routes, and reduce emissions.

Monitoring relies on a combination of automatic identification systems (AIS), radar, satellite tracking, and port-state control data. AIS provides real-time ship positions, speeds, and destinations for most vessels above a size threshold. Regional vessel traffic services (VTS) use this information to advise mariners, coordinate movements, and intervene when safety is at risk. Internationally recognized lanes and separation schemes guide traffic through busy areas and chokepoints.

Regulatory oversight stems from international law, notably the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and treaties such as SOLAS and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs). The IMO defines standards for vessel equipment, communications, and bridge procedures, while Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS) and other traffic schemes are implemented by coastal states and regional bodies.

Growing vessel density at major chokepoints, weather and environmental risks, piracy, and the push toward lower emissions are shaping sea traffic management. Advances include dynamic routing, digitalization, predictive analytics, and the prospect of autonomous ships. Cyber security, data sharing, and interoperability across jurisdictions remain ongoing concerns.
