Scotopticus is a genus of small to medium-sized birds of prey in the family Accipitridae, native to the Americas. The genus includes two species: the Short-tailed Hawk (Scotopticus brachyurus) and the Long-tailed Hawk (Scotopticus longirostris). Both species are known for their distinctive tail patterns, which are a combination of black and white bands.

Short-tailed Hawks are found in the southern United States and Central America, while Long-tailed Hawks are found in the southern United States, Mexico, and Central America. Both species are diurnal and primarily hunt small mammals, birds, and reptiles. They are known for their agile flight and their ability to perch on branches for extended periods.

Scotopticus hawks are generally solitary birds, except during the breeding season. They build their nests in trees, using sticks and other plant materials. The female lays a clutch of 2-3 eggs, which are incubated by both parents. The chicks are fed by both parents and fledge after about 30 days.

Despite their small size, Scotopticus hawks are powerful hunters and play an important role in their ecosystems by controlling populations of small mammals and birds. However, they are also vulnerable to habitat loss and other threats, and conservation efforts are underway to protect these species.
