Saltutsettelse, also known as salt leaching, is a process used to extract salt from seawater or brine. This method is particularly relevant in regions where freshwater resources are scarce, such as coastal areas and arid regions. The process involves the following steps:

First, seawater or brine is collected and pumped into a solar pond or an evaporation pond. Solar ponds are shallow bodies of water that are designed to maximize solar radiation absorption. Evaporation ponds, on the other hand, are larger and deeper, allowing for more extensive evaporation.

As the water evaporates, the concentration of salt increases. This concentrated brine is then pumped into a series of solar ponds or evaporation ponds, where the process is repeated. Each cycle increases the salt concentration, resulting in a more saline solution.

Once the salt concentration reaches a desired level, the brine is pumped into a crystallizer. The crystallizer is a large tank where the brine is cooled, causing the salt to precipitate out of the solution in the form of crystals. These crystals are then harvested and dried, resulting in pure salt.
