Sakroiliakální refers to the sacroiliac joints, which are the joints located between the sacrum, the triangular bone at the base of the spine, and the ilium, the largest part of the pelvis. There are two sacroiliac joints, one on each side of the pelvis. These joints are crucial for weight transfer from the upper body to the lower extremities and for stability of the pelvis. They are characterized by strong ligaments that hold the bones together.

The sacroiliac joints are synarthroses, meaning they are largely immovable, though they do allow for a small degree of motion. This limited movement is important during childbirth and for absorbing shock. Dysfunction or inflammation of these joints is known as sacroiliac joint dysfunction or sacroiliitis. Symptoms can include low back pain, buttock pain, and sometimes leg pain, which can mimic sciatica. Causes of sacroiliac joint dysfunction are varied and can include injury, arthritis, pregnancy, and biomechanical issues. Diagnosis typically involves physical examination, patient history, and sometimes imaging such as X-rays or MRI. Treatment approaches aim to reduce pain and inflammation and restore proper function, and may include physical therapy, medication, injections, or in rare cases, surgery.
