Sagedusmuutust, also known as frequency modulation (FM), is a method of encoding information on a carrier wave by varying its frequency. The carrier wave is a radio wave with a constant amplitude and frequency, which is then modified by the information signal. The information signal, also called the modulating signal, can be an audio signal, a video signal, or any other type of data.

In FM, the frequency of the carrier wave is changed in proportion to the amplitude of the modulating signal. When the amplitude of the modulating signal is positive, the frequency of the carrier wave increases. When the amplitude is negative, the frequency decreases. The rate at which the carrier wave's frequency changes is determined by the frequency of the modulating signal. This process allows for the transmission of complex information signals.

FM is widely used in radio broadcasting, particularly for music and high-fidelity audio, due to its ability to produce high-quality sound with reduced susceptibility to noise and interference compared to amplitude modulation (AM). The broader bandwidth required by FM signals also contributes to this improved audio quality. FM is also employed in various other applications, including two-way radios, television sound transmission, and some forms of wireless data communication. The demodulation process in FM receivers involves detecting these frequency variations and converting them back into the original information signal.
