Südamelihast, also known as cardiac muscle or myocardium, is a specialized type of muscle tissue found exclusively in the heart. It is one of the three major types of muscle in the body, alongside skeletal muscle and smooth muscle. The primary function of südamelihast is to contract and pump blood throughout the circulatory system, ensuring the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all tissues and organs.

The cells that make up südamelihast are called cardiomyocytes. These cells are unique in several ways. They are striated, meaning they have a striped appearance under a microscope, similar to skeletal muscle. However, unlike skeletal muscle, cardiomyocytes are involuntary, meaning their contractions are not under conscious control. They are also branched and interconnected by specialized junctions called intercalated discs, which allow electrical impulses to spread rapidly from cell to cell, enabling the coordinated contraction of the entire heart.

Südamelihast is characterized by its incredible endurance and resistance to fatigue. It beats continuously from before birth until death, performing millions of contractions each day. This constant work requires a high metabolic rate and an abundant supply of oxygen and nutrients, which is provided by the coronary arteries. Damage to südamelihast, such as that which occurs during a heart attack, can impair the heart's ability to pump effectively and can have serious health consequences.
