Sõnemoodustamine refers to the process of word formation in linguistics. It encompasses the various ways new words are created within a language. This can occur through several mechanisms.

One common method is derivation, where a new word is formed by adding an affix (a prefix or suffix) to an existing word. For example, in English, adding "-ness" to "happy" creates "happiness." In Estonian, adding the prefix "mitte-" to "juhuslik" (random) forms "mittejuhuslik" (not random).

Another significant process is compounding, where two or more existing words are joined together to form a new, single word. This is seen in English words like "sunflower" or "blackboard." Estonian also extensively uses compounding, such as combining "raamat" (book) and "kogu" (collection) to create "raamatukogu" (library).

Conversion, or zero derivation, is the process of changing a word's grammatical class without altering its form. For instance, a noun can become a verb, or an adjective can become a noun. While less prevalent in some languages, it contributes to vocabulary expansion.
