Sävyerovuus is a Finnish compound term that literally combines sävy (tone, shade, timbre) and erovuus (difference) to denote a distinction in tone, color or nuance. It is used broadly in visual arts, color science, music and language to describe perceptible differences between tones, hues, timbres or expressive nuances.

In colorimetry and design sävyerovuus refers to differences between colors or shades as perceived by observers or measured instrumentally. Practical applications include printing and manufacturing quality control, where spectrophotometers and color-difference formulas (for example ΔE metrics) quantify how closely two samples match. In visual arts and photography the term may be used more qualitatively to discuss contrasts, gradients and subtle shifts in value or chroma.

In music and acoustics sävyerovuus can describe timbral differences between instruments, voices or sound sources, encompassing harmonic content, envelope and spectral balance that give each source its characteristic tone. In linguistics and communication it refers to differences in spoken tone or nuance—intonation, emphasis and subtle variations that affect meaning or register.

The concept is inherently context-dependent: what counts as a significant sävyerovuus varies with the perceptual sensitivity of observers, the measurement method, and the functional requirements of a given field.
