Sähköikkunoita, or electric windows, are a vehicle feature that allows for the operation of window glass via an electric motor. This system replaced the older manual crank windows, offering greater convenience and ease of use. Typically, electric windows are operated by switches located on the door panels, usually near the window itself. Pressing a switch in one direction lowers the window, while pressing it in the opposite direction raises it.

The system comprises several key components. A small electric motor is attached to the window regulator mechanism. The regulator is a series of levers and gears that translate the rotational motion of the motor into the vertical movement of the window glass. The switches act as the user interface, sending signals to the motor to initiate movement. Power is supplied by the vehicle's electrical system. Many modern vehicles also include additional features like one-touch operation, where a quick press of the switch fully opens or closes the window, and anti-pinch protection, which automatically reverses the window's movement if an obstruction is detected. The driver's door panel often features a master control panel that allows for the operation of all windows in the vehicle, as well as a lockout feature to prevent passengers from operating the rear windows.
