Räjähdyssuojausjärjestelmä, known in English as explosion protection system, refers to a set of measures and technologies designed to prevent, control, or mitigate the effects of explosions. These systems are crucial in environments where flammable or explosive materials are present, posing a risk to personnel, equipment, and facilities.

The primary goals of an explosion protection system are to avoid the formation of explosive atmospheres, prevent ignition sources from reaching an explosive atmosphere, and limit the impact of an explosion if it does occur. This can involve a combination of different approaches. Avoiding explosive atmospheres might include ventilation systems to keep concentrations of flammable gases or dust below their lower explosive limit. Preventing ignition sources can involve using intrinsically safe electrical equipment, grounding and bonding to prevent static discharge, and controlling hot surfaces.

If an explosion cannot be prevented, the system aims to limit its damage. This can be achieved through methods like explosion venting, which directs the explosion pressure and flame to a safe area through rupture discs or vents. Another method is explosion suppression, where extinguishing agents are rapidly injected into the combustion zone to stop the explosion before it fully develops. Explosion isolation is also a key component, preventing an explosion from propagating through ductwork or pipelines to other parts of the facility.

The design and implementation of explosion protection systems are subject to strict regulations and standards, which vary depending on the industry and the specific hazardous materials involved. Risk assessment is fundamental to determining the appropriate protection measures.
