Ryggmärgsvätska, also known as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), is a clear, colorless fluid that fills the space between the meninges, the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is produced by specialized cells called choroid plexuses located within the ventricles of the brain. This fluid acts as a cushion, protecting the central nervous system from physical shock and injury.

The circulation of CSF is a continuous process. It is produced in the ventricles, flows through a series of interconnected cavities within the brain and down into the central canal of the spinal cord. From there, it is reabsorbed into the bloodstream through arachnoid villi, which are small protrusions of the arachnoid mater into the dural venous sinuses. This dynamic circulation is crucial for maintaining a stable environment for the brain and spinal cord.

CSF plays several vital roles. Beyond its protective cushioning function, it also serves to remove metabolic waste products from the central nervous system. Furthermore, it contributes to nutrient and electrolyte balance, ensuring optimal neuronal function. Analysis of CSF can provide valuable diagnostic information about various neurological conditions, including infections, inflammation, and certain types of cancer. The pressure of the CSF is also an important physiological parameter.
