Ruoansulatuselimistö, also known as the digestive system, is a complex network of organs responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste from the body. This process begins in the mouth, where food is mechanically broken down by chewing and chemically by enzymes in saliva. From the mouth, food travels down the esophagus to the stomach, a muscular organ that further mixes and digests food with stomach acid and enzymes.

The partially digested food then moves into the small intestine, where the majority of nutrient absorption takes place. Here, enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver aid in breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into smaller molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. The large intestine follows, primarily responsible for absorbing water and electrolytes from the remaining indigestible food matter.

Bacteria residing in the large intestine also play a role in synthesizing certain vitamins. Finally, the waste products, or feces, are stored in the rectum before being eliminated from the body through the anus. This entire process, from ingestion to elimination, ensures that the body receives the essential nutrients it needs for energy, growth, and repair. The digestive system is crucial for overall health and well-being.
