Routing protocols operate using various algorithms to determine the best path for data packets. Distance-vector protocols, like RIP, use hop count as the primary metric, while link-state protocols, such as OSPF and IS-IS, use more complex metrics that consider factors like bandwidth and delay. Path-vector protocols, like BGP, use path attributes to make routing decisions.
