The term "rmsværdi" is Danish and translates to "RMS value" in English, standing for Root Mean Square. It is a statistical measure of the magnitude of a varying quantity, particularly useful for AC (alternating current) electrical signals and other fluctuating physical phenomena.

The RMS value provides a way to compare the power delivered by a varying signal to the power delivered by a constant DC (direct current) signal. Specifically, the RMS value of a varying voltage or current is equivalent to the DC voltage or current that would produce the same amount of heat in a resistive load. This makes it a crucial concept in electrical engineering for specifying power ratings of devices and for calculating power dissipation.

Mathematically, the RMS value is calculated by taking the square root of the mean of the squares of the instantaneous values of the signal over a specific period. For a continuous function x(t), the RMS value over an interval [a, b] is given by sqrt((1/(b-a)) * integral from a to b of x(t)^2 dt). For discrete sets of values, it involves squaring each value, calculating the average of these squares, and then taking the square root of that average.
