Rikos­oikeuden­käynti is the Finnish term for criminal proceedings. It is the legal process through which a person accused of committing a crime is brought before a court of law to determine their guilt or innocence. This process is initiated by the prosecution, which can be an individual or a public prosecutor, based on evidence gathered during a police investigation.

The proceedings typically begin with the indictment, where the charges against the accused are formally presented. The accused has the right to legal representation throughout the process, and if they cannot afford an attorney, one may be appointed to them. During the trial, both the prosecution and the defense present their cases, including evidence, witness testimonies, and legal arguments. The court, consisting of judges and sometimes lay assessors, evaluates the presented information to reach a verdict.

If the accused is found guilty, the court proceeds to sentencing. The sentence can range from fines and community service to imprisonment, depending on the severity of the crime and any aggravating or mitigating circumstances. If found not guilty, the accused is acquitted. An appeal process is available for both the prosecution and the defense if they are dissatisfied with the court's decision.
