ribbakverket

Ribbåkverket is an ancient fortified settlement and archaeological site located in HåFjord, Norway. The site is situated near the rural community of Håstein and dates back to the Viking Age. Archaeological excavations have revealed that the settlement was inhabited from approximately 600 to 900 AD.

The name "Ribbåkverket" translates to " Ribbow curlwork" or " Ribbow crook" in Norwegian. However, the meaning and significance of the name are unclear. It is believed that the term "Ribbåk" may refer to a type of housing or a specific architectural feature of the settlement.

Ribbåkverket is a unique example of a Viking Age fortified settlement. The site features a complex system of earthworks and defensive structures that protected the inhabitant's homes and farmland from threats. Archaeologists have identified several distinct periods of occupation at the site. Excavations have uncovered artifacts and relics, including pottery, jewelry, and tools, that provide valuable insights into the lives of the people who once lived there.

Preservation efforts have been undertaken to protect the site from erosion and damage. A research project was conducted in the 1980s to document the archaeological features and artifacts of Ribbåkverket. The site is listed as a protected cultural heritage site by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage.
