Retrogradation is a term used in astronomy to describe the apparent backward movement of a planet in its orbit as observed from Earth. This phenomenon occurs due to the combined effects of the Earth's and the planet's orbital motion. As the Earth orbits the Sun, it overtakes the slower-moving outer planets, causing them to appear to move backward in the sky relative to the background stars. This backward motion is not an actual change in the planet's direction but rather a result of the different speeds at which the Earth and the planet are moving around the Sun.

Retrogradation was a significant concern to ancient astronomers, who struggled to explain the apparent irregularities in the motion of the planets. The Greek astronomer Ptolemy proposed a complex system of epicycles and deferents to account for these irregularities, which was widely accepted for over a thousand years. However, the heliocentric model proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus and later refined by Johannes Kepler provided a more accurate explanation for the observed motion of the planets, including retrogradation.

In modern astronomy, retrogradation is understood as a result of the relative motion of the Earth and the planet. When the Earth overtakes a planet, the planet appears to move backward in the sky, reaching a point called the stationary point. After this, the planet resumes its normal eastward motion, eventually catching up to the Earth again. This cycle of apparent backward and forward motion repeats as the Earth and the planet continue their orbits around the Sun.
