Rekisteritasolle, also known as a "registration plate" or "license plate" in English, refers to a metal or plastic plate attached to a vehicle that displays a unique alphanumeric code. This code serves as an official identifier for the vehicle, allowing authorities to track ownership, registration details, and compliance with traffic regulations. In Finland, where the term originates, registration plates follow a standardized format introduced in 2000, though older formats remain in use.

The Finnish registration plate system typically consists of four digits followed by three letters, separated by a hyphen (e.g., 1234-ABC). The first two digits represent the vehicle’s registration year, while the last two digits indicate a sequential number assigned within that year. The three letters are randomly assigned and do not carry additional meaning. Special plates, such as those for diplomatic vehicles or temporary registrations, may follow different formats.
