A reflection wave, also known as a refleksionsbølge in Norwegian, is a type of wave that occurs when a wave encounters a boundary and is reflected back into the medium from which it originated. This phenomenon is a fundamental concept in wave mechanics and is observed in various contexts, including sound, light, and water waves.

Reflection waves are characterized by their ability to maintain the same frequency and wavelength as the incident wave, but with a phase shift that depends on the nature of the boundary. For instance, in the case of sound waves reflecting off a hard surface, the phase shift is 180 degrees, leading to an inversion of the wave. In contrast, light waves reflecting off a smooth surface may experience a phase shift of 180 degrees or remain unchanged, depending on the angle of incidence and the properties of the surface.

The principle of reflection waves is governed by the laws of reflection, which state that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection, and the incident wave, the reflected wave, and the normal to the surface all lie in the same plane. These laws apply to both specular and diffuse reflection, with specular reflection occurring when the reflecting surface is smooth and the incident wave is reflected at a single angle, while diffuse reflection happens when the surface is rough and the incident wave is scattered in various directions.

Reflection waves have numerous practical applications, including in optics, acoustics, and seismology. In optics, reflection is used in the design of mirrors and lenses, while in acoustics, it is employed in the construction of concert halls and soundproofing materials. In seismology, the study of reflection waves is crucial for understanding the structure of the Earth's interior and for the development of seismic imaging techniques.
