Reequilibrate is a verb that describes the process of restoring balance or stability to something that has become unbalanced. This can apply to a wide range of situations, from financial markets to biological systems to personal well-being.

In finance, reequilibrating refers to the act of adjusting an investment portfolio to bring it back to its original target asset allocation. Over time, the performance of different assets within a portfolio can cause the proportions to shift. For example, if stocks have performed exceptionally well, they might come to represent a larger percentage of the portfolio than originally intended. Reequilibrating involves selling some of the overperforming assets and buying more of the underperforming ones to return to the desired balance.

Beyond finance, the term can be used more generally. A person might need to reequilibrate their work-life balance if they feel overwhelmed by professional demands. Similarly, an ecosystem could reequilibrate after a disturbance, such as a wildfire, as plant and animal populations adjust and a new equilibrium is established. The core idea is always a return to a state of equilibrium or a desired state of balance after a period of deviation.
