Rakutuvastuse, also known as cellular respiration, is a fundamental biological process that occurs in the cells of most living organisms. It is the mechanism by which cells convert biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and then release waste products. This process is essential for powering cellular activities, growth, and maintenance.

The most common form of cellular respiration is aerobic respiration, which requires oxygen. Aerobic respiration can be broadly divided into three main stages: glycolysis, the Krebs cycle (also known as the citric acid cycle), and oxidative phosphorylation. Anaerobic respiration is an alternative pathway that occurs in the absence of oxygen. While it generates less ATP than aerobic respiration, it is still a vital process for some organisms and in certain conditions, such as during strenuous exercise in muscle cells. Fermentation is a type of anaerobic respiration that regenerates NAD+ from NADH, allowing glycolysis to continue.

Cellular respiration is a highly regulated process, ensuring that the cell produces ATP efficiently and in accordance with its energy demands. Disruptions in cellular respiration can lead to various diseases and play a role in aging.
