A pyrometer is a non-contact thermometer used to measure high temperatures. These temperatures are often too high to be measured by conventional thermometers that require direct contact. Pyrometers typically work by measuring the thermal radiation emitted by an object. The intensity and spectral distribution of this emitted radiation are related to the object's temperature.

There are several types of pyrometers. Optical pyrometers, for example, compare the brightness of the hot object to a calibrated light source. Radiation pyrometers measure the total amount of thermal radiation emitted by an object and use a formula, such as the Stefan-Boltzmann law, to calculate its temperature. Infrared pyrometers are a common type of radiation pyrometer that focus on the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. These devices are useful for measuring temperatures of objects that are not visibly glowing.

Pyrometers find applications in a wide range of industries. They are used in metallurgy for monitoring molten metal temperatures, in glass manufacturing, in power plants, and in the aerospace industry for measuring engine temperatures.
