Pulsrespons, or pulse response, is the time-domain reaction of a linear time-invariant system to a short, finite-duration input signal, typically a rectangular pulse. It provides a practical characterization of how a system responds to transient disturbances or stimuli, complementary to the idealized impulse response.

In theory, a system’s output for any input is the convolution of the input with the impulse response. When the input is a rectangular pulse, the resulting output is the pulse response: a record of how the system’s internal dynamics shape the input as it passes through the system. If the input pulse becomes very short while preserving its area, the pulse response approaches the impulse response, which fully characterizes the system in the time domain.

Pulsrespons is particularly useful when inputs are not ideal impulses, such as in electronic testing with fast voltage pulses, ultrasonic imaging, radar, acoustics, and communication channels. Measuring the pulse response helps identify time-domain distortions, delays, and the spread of signals, informing tasks like filtering, equalization, and system identification.

Relation to other responses: the step response of a system is the integral of its impulse response, capturing how the system accumulates input over time. The pulse response, in contrast, reflects the system’s reaction to a finite, transient input and can be used to infer the impulse response through deconvolution or by studying the system’s response to pulses of varying width.

In discrete-time systems, the concept is analogous: the output to a finite-length pulse reflects the system’s sample-by-sample reaction, useful for digital signal processing and channel characterization.
