Pruinosity refers to a powdery or waxy coating found on the surface of certain plants and fruits. This bloom is a natural defense mechanism that helps to protect the organism from dehydration, excessive sunlight, and insect or pathogen attack. The pruinose coating is typically a light bluish-gray or white color and can be easily rubbed off, though it will regenerate over time.

Botanically, this waxy layer is composed of epicuticular waxes, which are a complex mixture of fatty acids, alcohols, and esters. The structure and composition of these waxes vary significantly between species, contributing to the diverse appearance and texture of the pruinose coating. In some plants, like certain succulents, the pruinosity is very thick and prominent, providing significant protection. In others, it may be a subtle, almost imperceptible film.

The presence and intensity of pruinosity can be influenced by environmental factors such as light intensity, temperature, and humidity. Plants grown in full sun may exhibit more pronounced pruinosity than those grown in shade. This coating is particularly noticeable on fruits like grapes, plums, and blueberries, where it contributes to their characteristic appearance and can affect their shelf life and palatability for consumers. While it can be removed during processing, its presence is a sign of freshness and natural development.
