Protein synthesis is the fundamental biological process by which cells create new proteins. This process is essential for virtually all cellular functions and is carried out in two main stages: transcription and translation. Transcription occurs in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells and involves the copying of genetic information from DNA into a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule. This mRNA then travels out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm.

Translation takes place in the cytoplasm on ribosomes, which are cellular machinery responsible for protein production. During translation, the sequence of nucleotides in the mRNA molecule is read by transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules. Each tRNA carries a specific amino acid, the building blocks of proteins. The ribosomes facilitate the binding of the correct tRNA to the mRNA, aligning the amino acids in the precise order dictated by the mRNA sequence. This sequential addition of amino acids forms a polypeptide chain, which then folds into a functional three-dimensional protein. The genetic code, a set of rules by which information encoded in genetic material is translated into proteins, dictates this specific amino acid sequence. Errors in protein synthesis can lead to non-functional proteins and have significant consequences for cellular health and organismal function.
