Principal delegates are the main representatives authorized to act on behalf of a principal in a formal delegation. The precise meaning depends on context, but they typically carry delegated authority for a defined purpose, represent a defined constituency, and are bound by rules that limit their powers and duration.

In political party conventions and legislative delegations, principal delegates are the core members of a delegation who carry voting rights or significant negotiation influence on behalf of the principals—such as voters, states, or organizations. They are usually chosen through elections, party processes, or internal appointments. Some systems designate pledged or bound delegates who must vote for predetermined candidates, while others use unpledged or free delegates. Alternates may exist to fill vacancies or attend when principal delegates cannot be present.

In agency and governance contexts, the term aligns with the principal–agent relationship. A principal delegates authority to an agent to perform tasks or decisions within an agreed scope.
