The term *postganglionowy* refers to structures or pathways in the autonomic nervous system that occur after the ganglion, a cluster of nerve cell bodies. The autonomic nervous system regulates involuntary physiological functions such as heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, pupillary response, urination, and sexual arousal. It is divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, each with distinct postganglionic pathways.

In the sympathetic nervous system, postganglionic neurons originate from ganglia located near the spinal cord (paravertebral ganglia) or within abdominal organs (prevertebral ganglia). These neurons release the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (noradrenaline) at their synapses with target organs, although some exceptions release acetylcholine. The postganglionic fibers extend to various tissues, including blood vessels, sweat glands, and smooth muscle in the skin and internal organs.

In contrast, the parasympathetic nervous system has postganglionic neurons that are typically located near or within the target organs themselves (e.g., in the walls of the eye, heart, or gastrointestinal tract). These neurons predominantly release acetylcholine, which binds to muscarinic receptors on effector cells. The parasympathetic postganglionic fibers tend to be shorter than their sympathetic counterparts, as the ganglia are closer to the organs they innervate.

Postganglionic fibers play a critical role in mediating the autonomic responses that maintain homeostasis. Dysfunction in these pathways can contribute to various medical conditions, including autonomic neuropathy, which may result from diabetes, autoimmune disorders, or other systemic diseases. Understanding the anatomy and physiology of postganglionic pathways is essential for diagnosing and treating disorders affecting autonomic function.
