Polymer production, or polimérgyártás in Hungarian, refers to the industrial process of manufacturing polymers. Polymers are large molecules composed of repeating structural units called monomers. This process typically involves chemical reactions that link these monomers together to form long chains or networks.

The most common method for polymer production is polymerization, which can occur through various mechanisms such as addition polymerization, condensation polymerization, or ring-opening polymerization. Addition polymerization involves the direct joining of monomers without the loss of any atoms, often initiated by free radicals, cations, or anions. Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, forms polymers by linking monomers with the simultaneous release of a small molecule, such as water or methanol.

The raw materials for polymer production are usually derived from petroleum and natural gas, although bio-based and recycled feedstocks are gaining importance. The specific monomers used determine the type of polymer produced, leading to a wide array of materials with diverse properties, including plastics, rubbers, and fibers.

The manufacturing process can take place in different reactor types, such as batch reactors, continuous stirred-tank reactors, or plug flow reactors, depending on the desired scale and reaction kinetics. After polymerization, the resulting polymer often undergoes further processing steps like extrusion, molding, or spinning to shape it into usable forms. Quality control is crucial throughout the production process to ensure the polymer meets the required specifications for its intended application.
