Polyvinyylikloridiksi, commonly known as PVC, is a widely used synthetic plastic polymer. Its chemical formula is (C2H3Cl)n. PVC is the third most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer, after polyethylene and polypropylene. It is produced by the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer.

PVC exists in two main forms: rigid (unplasticized) and flexible. The rigid form is used in construction for pipes, window frames, and siding. The flexible form is made pliable by the addition of plasticizers, such as phthalates. This flexible version finds applications in electrical cable insulation, inflatable products, and medical devices like tubing and blood bags.

The properties of PVC can be significantly modified through the use of additives. Stabilizers are added to prevent degradation from heat and UV light, while fillers can reduce cost and improve impact resistance. Colorants are used to achieve a wide range of aesthetic options.

PVC's durability, resistance to chemicals and moisture, and low cost contribute to its widespread use in various industries. However, concerns regarding the environmental impact of its production and disposal, particularly the release of chlorine and the presence of phthalates in some formulations, have led to ongoing research and development into alternative materials and more sustainable manufacturing processes.
