Synthesis and processing involve polyaddition reactions between isocyanates and polyols. Water in foam formulations reacts with isocyanates to generate carbon dioxide, acting as a blowing agent to create foam structure. Common diisocyanates include methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI). Safety considerations are important, as isocyanates can be respiratory sensitizers; proper ventilation, containment, and protective equipment are standard. Environmental aspects focus on production energy requirements, waste management, and the use of bio-based polyols or recycled components to improve sustainability.
