Polyploidy refers to the condition where an organism has more than two complete sets of chromosomes. This is in contrast to diploid organisms, which have two sets, one inherited from each parent. Polyploidy is common in plants, where it has played a significant role in evolution and the development of new species. For example, many crops like wheat, cotton, and potatoes are polyploid. In animals, polyploidy is much rarer and often lethal, although some invertebrates and fish can be polyploid.

The process of polyploidy can occur through a failure of chromosome separation during cell division, a phenomenon known as nondisjunction, which can lead to a doubling of the chromosome set. This can happen in germ cells, leading to polyploid gametes, which can then fuse to form a polyploid zygote. Alternatively, it can occur in somatic cells, leading to mosaicism where some tissues are polyploid and others are diploid. Polyploidy can result in increased cell size, altered gene expression, and changes in morphology. In plants, polyploidy is often associated with increased vigor and larger reproductive organs, which can be advantageous for survival and reproduction. The evolutionary implications of polyploidy are substantial, as it can lead to rapid speciation due to reproductive isolation from diploid ancestors.
