Polymerization is a chemical process where small molecules, known as monomers, react together to form larger molecules called polymers. These polymers are essentially long chains made up of repeating monomer units. The term "polymericization" is often used interchangeably with polymerization, referring to the act or process of creating these polymers.

There are two main types of polymerization reactions: addition polymerization and condensation polymerization. In addition polymerization, monomers add to one another in such a way that the polymer contains all the atoms of the monomer. This process typically involves the formation of a chain reaction, often initiated by free radicals, cations, or anions. Examples include the formation of polyethylene from ethylene monomers and polystyrene from styrene monomers.

Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, involves the reaction between monomers where a small molecule, such as water or methanol, is eliminated as a byproduct. The resulting polymer chain is shorter than the sum of the monomers' masses because of this eliminated molecule. Polyesters, polyamides (like nylon), and polycarbonates are common examples of polymers formed through condensation polymerization. The choice of monomer and the specific polymerization method dictate the properties of the resulting polymer, influencing its strength, flexibility, thermal stability, and chemical resistance, which in turn determines its applications in various industries.
