Polymeerivälitteisyys, known in English as polymer mediation or polymer effect, refers to the phenomenon where the presence of a polymer in a solution influences the rate or mechanism of a chemical reaction. This influence can be either positive, accelerating the reaction, or negative, retarding it.

The underlying principle of polymeerivälitteisyys lies in the ability of polymer chains to interact with reactants, intermediates, or transition states of a chemical process. These interactions can occur through various forces, including van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, or hydrophobic effects.
