Synthesis

Polyethyleneterephthalate is produced through a transesterification reaction between ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalate. The process involves heating the reactants together in the presence of a catalyst, such as antimony trioxide, to form the desired polymer. During the process, the dimethyl terephthalate is converted into the terephthaloyl dichloride intermediate. The ethylene glycol is activated using sulfur trioxide and is then reacted with the dichloride intermediate. The glycol is then dehydrated using ethylene oxide leading to polymerization. The end product has desirable physical properties such as durability and transparency.
