Polarisationsa is a term that refers to the phenomenon of light behaving as a transverse wave. Light waves oscillate in a direction perpendicular to their direction of travel. There are several ways to polarize light. One common method is through selective absorption, where a polarizing filter is used. These filters allow light waves oscillating in a specific direction to pass through while absorbing waves oscillating in other directions. Another method is reflection. When unpolarized light strikes a non-metallic surface at a certain angle, known as Brewster's angle, the reflected light becomes polarized. Scattering of light, such as by the atmosphere, also leads to polarization.

Polarized light has numerous applications. Polarized sunglasses reduce glare from surfaces like water and roads by blocking horizontally polarized light, which is the dominant form of glare. In photography, polarizing filters can enhance contrast and reduce reflections. In scientific instruments like LCD screens and certain types of microscopes, polarization is crucial for their operation. The study of polarization is fundamental to understanding the wave nature of light and its interactions with matter.
