Polarization refers to a property of transverse waves, such as electromagnetic waves like light, that describes the orientation of the oscillations. In a transverse wave, the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. For example, light waves are electromagnetic waves that consist of oscillating electric and magnetic fields that are perpendicular to each other and to the direction the light is traveling.

Unpolarized light consists of waves with oscillations in all possible directions perpendicular to the direction of propagation. When light passes through a polarizing filter, only the oscillations in a specific direction are allowed to pass through. This results in polarized light, where the oscillations are confined to a single plane. This plane is called the plane of polarization.

Different types of polarization exist, including linear polarization, circular polarization, and elliptical polarization, depending on the way the electric field vector rotates or oscillates. Linear polarization is the most common type discussed.

Polarization has numerous practical applications. It is used in sunglasses to reduce glare by blocking horizontally polarized light reflected from surfaces like water or roads. Polarizing filters are also employed in photography, LCD screens to control light transmission, and in scientific instruments for studying the properties of materials. The phenomenon of polarization is a fundamental concept in optics and electromagnetism.
