Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus (purulent material), causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Symptoms of pneumonia can range from mild to severe, depending on the type of germ causing the infection, your age, and your overall health. Common symptoms include cough, fever, chills, and shortness of breath. You might also experience chest pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Diagnosis of pneumonia usually involves a physical exam, chest X-ray, and sometimes blood tests or sputum tests. Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the pneumonia. Bacterial pneumonia is typically treated with antibiotics. Viral pneumonia usually doesn't respond to antibiotics and may require antiviral medications or supportive care. Fungal pneumonia is treated with antifungal medications.

Preventive measures include vaccinations against influenza and pneumococcal bacteria, good hygiene practices like frequent handwashing, and avoiding smoking. People with weakened immune systems, young children, and older adults are at higher risk for developing pneumonia and may experience more severe illness.
