Pluripotentní is a Czech term referring to cells that possess pluripotency. Pluripotency is a property of stem cells. A pluripotent cell is a cell that has the potential to differentiate into any cell type in the three germ layers: endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm. However, it cannot differentiate into extraembryonic tissues such as the placenta.

There are several types of pluripotent cells. Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are a prime example. These are derived from the inner cell mass of the blastocyst, an early-stage embryo. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are another important category. These are created by reprogramming somatic cells, such as skin cells, back into a pluripotent state. This reprogramming process essentially reverts the specialized cell to a more primitive, undifferentiated state.

The ability of pluripotent cells to differentiate into various cell types makes them incredibly valuable in research and potential therapeutic applications. Scientists can study disease mechanisms by differentiating pluripotent cells into specific cell types affected by a particular condition. Furthermore, regenerative medicine explores the possibility of using these cells to repair damaged tissues or organs, for instance, by generating new neurons for Parkinson's disease patients or new pancreatic beta cells for diabetics. However, the use of pluripotent stem cells, particularly ESCs, is also a subject of ethical debate and ongoing scientific research into alternative sources and methods.
